Terracotta bison with legs on a bed of leaves, by Demétre Haralamb Chiparus (1886-1947). The Romanian artist worked and lived in Paris where he became one of the most appreciated Art Deco sculptors. One of his “American Bison” sculptures was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1942.

The markedly naturalistic style with which the artist portrayed animals was the result of long sessions of observation. He died of a heart attack on his way back from a visit to the Vincennes zoo.
