FASHION IS CARTOGRAPHY

  3. FASHION IS CARTOGRAPHY
We salute Emanuele Coccia. The Italian philosopher who, by mixing Fashion, Aesthetics and Ecology, offers an atlas to guide us through the world.

We (women and men) are a landscape. An integral part of it. And the landscape is part of us. When our heels clack, it’s the wood of the trees that they’re made of that echoes. It is somewhat redeeming for those who played the tree in the school play.

The grassy meadows we cross have fed those animals that at the end of their lives will give their skin to clothe ours, with garments that put women and men back into the landscape in a circular (ecological, philosophical) way.

 WE ARE LANDSCAPE

We are the landscape, however, in the opposite direction as well. It clothes us: with materials, atmosphere, and an ecological past. And we clothe it: with our beautiful presence. Inside this game of mirrors we can understand Emanuele Coccia’s hypothesis.

AND FASHION ORIENTS US

The hypothesis, that is, that Fashion is also Cartography. In his words, «Every garment must transform bodies into an atlas, a mechanism that accesses and intelligibly penetrates an unknown world.»

How to get one’s bearings? In an accelerated world that is oblivious to its inhabitants and landscapes – Coccia seems to say – choosing a responsible fashion brand to clothe men and women in the right garments that are open to the «unknown» is the first step.
