FASHION IS PHILOSOPHY

You are here:

  3. FASHION IS PHILOSOPHY
Let’s circle back to Emanuele Coccia. The Italian philosopher who’s blending Fashion, Aesthetics, and Ecology.

Fashion and Philosophy. Inside a conjunction, such a small word with so many possibilities. To be revisited like roads from the history of thought to the history of fashion tastes. And new possibilities, clothes yet to be designed, theories yet to be thought.
The latter is usually less attractive than the former. A string of pearls around the neck is not worn as comfortably as an aesthetic theory. Or is it? For some time now there has been talk of «Everyday Aesthetics.» What’s beautiful is no less beautiful, though we might see it every day.

THERE IS AN EVERYDAY AESTHETIC

A clear voice can be heard talking about these things. About Fashion. And Aesthetics. It’s mixing them together. The results are yet to be discovered. For the time being, Emanuele Coccia is holding his Parisian lessons, seeking a new critical language in clothes.

AND IT OPENS YOUR EYES TO THE CHANGING ENVIRONMENT

We are a Journal. Not a treatise. But ideas – as we know – blossom inside us, touched by a different light each time. There’s the glow of the smartphone which you’re reading this post on. And sure: even with regards to your wardrobe. Coccia once wrote – in a nutshell – that the more colors a person’s wardrobe has, the more ideas there are.

Uniforms are the problem. «White Collar», we say. Two hideous words. How ugly is the landscape made up of men all wearing the same jacket-tie-shirt combo. But it gets worse. Uniform clothes create conformity, and block change.

Change of opinion. De-constructing one’s own privilege. The realization – here’s the shock – of traversing a changing environment. Yes. The style of our dress opens our eyes to who we are and where we’re going. It is knowledge. Fashion really is Philosophy.
