Amazon frontier: Nemonte Nenquimo’s forest

  3. Amazon frontier: Nemonte Nenquimo’s forest
In this second episode dedicated to Nemonte Nenquimo, Il Bisonte Journal recounts the results of her fight for the Amazonian region together with her other nationalities.

Nemonte Nenquimo has been awarded the so-called Green Nobel. If only it were the old-fashioned one – for Peace in her case – just the recipient being a woman would have been good news: simply noting «for her» in the award description would be astounding. Plus, she’s Amerindian! The Waorani activist, though, probably doesn’t really care for the Swedish and Norwegian Academies or other foundations dispensing these Sustainability awards. Here’s the grim reality: the West is honoring Nemonte for being in a fight with the West itself.

The Kofan, Siona, Secoya, and Waorani nationalities from deep within Ecuador scream: Our pluvial forest is not on sale. To rally their cry, and act as an ensemble in harmony, they formed solidarity networks. Ceibo Alliance, founded by Nemonte in 2015, is one of these. Amazon Frontlines, whose frontiers are those which have been eroded by speculation in the Amazon region, is another. Their four main goals have produced results that are already extraordinary.

Nemonte’s fourth goal is shared by Il Bisonte Journal.

First off, Building Solutions: allowing access to potable water and electric solar energy to indigenous communities in polluted territories. Second, Reviving Culture: educating through ancient shamanic rituals using ayahuasca, and through cures based on traditional herbs. Third, Defending Territory: mapping Amazon communities with digital democracy systems, and employing legal instruments to safeguard them. The fourth, shared by our Journal, allows us to respectfully peer into Nemonte’s land: Telling Stories.
