1972-1973

Sustainability has a birth date. It was in June of 1972, between Tuesday the 5th and Friday the 16th. At the end of the first Conference on the Environment held in Stockholm, in the Folkets Hus on the shores of the Baltic, the United Nations signed a general declaration. A little later its echo would sound: Sustainable Development “is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Our Common Future).”

A year had not yet elapsed when on the more temperate banks of the Arno, in via del Parione in Florence, Wanny di Filippo inaugurated the first Il Bisonte designer bag shop in 1973.

This was not a generous coincidence, but rather a thought born in the beginning of the seventies that was both generous and shared by world representatives and a modest master craftsman alike. Sustainability is a generous thought. And those who, like Il Bisonte, cultivate these thoughts, end up changing their landscape and reaping the greatest rewards.
